IEEE Communication society expert lectures about future of 5G cellular networks

The visit of Dr. Albert Banchs, an expert in Telecommunications, allowed students of the Master’s Degree in Information Technology and Telecommunications Engineering to learn about new technology and different methodologies and tools which, in time, will serve as support for deep research within the information technology industry (IT).

As part of the IEEE Distinguished Visitors Program tour in Central American countries, the professional, Dr. Albert Banchs, a member of the IEEE Communication Society, visited Galileo University to lecture about topics related to: technology, algorithms, research results they have developed and real problems they try to solve within the latest transmission technologies, such as 5G cellular networks.

“When you have two mobile devices that communicate with each other, they do it through a base station, so that they consume mobile network resources. What we can do with this technology, is to free the mobile network from this traffic, which allows the cell phones to communicate directly with each other,” explained Dr. Banchs and added: “The challenge in this research is to free the mobile network from this burden, but maintaining the same quality in mobile networks.”

The expert also explained that, within the aforementioned program, the goal is to bring the students closer to the current technology, so they can learn how the research is done while observing, at the same time, the different methodologies, which will help them with their own research or with their academic growth.

Dr. Marco To, Director of the Postgraduate in Computer Security at Galileo University, expressed his satisfaction with Dr. Banchs’ visit, since it is the way in which students can have contact with professionals who work in research and with real cases on technological advances, this reinforces the academic quality, since it highlights the valuable utility of the profession within the industry.

“This event is part of the efforts of the IEEE Section Guatemala and its knowledge societies. Also, they are a preamble to one of the most prestigious conferences in Latin America, which for the first time will come to Guatemala from November 8 to November 10 of this year. This conference is the -9th Latin American Conference on Communications (IEEE LATINCOM 2017) -, where Galileo University has a leading role in the organization, being myself the -General Chairman- (President) of the conference. More information will be given later on.”
